Donegal Placename Project
Welcome to the Donegal Placename Project website. The Donegal placename project has recently been initiated by the Donegal County Council Heritage Office. The objective of the project is to map the placenames of a selection of Donegal townlands that reflect the richness of the cultural heritage of the county. Townlands will be selected on the basis of:
- the richness of townland name data collected
- the extent to which names represents the natural, built and cultural landscape of Donegal
- being located in both Gaeltacht and non-Gaeltacht areas
The intention is to exhibit large scale maps of the selected townlands at a public information evening in Donegal at the end of the project. An accompanying placename gazetteer in which the history and meaning of names will also be produced.
Maps will then be given to the community groups that collected the data.
