Short bio:

Dr Urška Demšar is lecturer in Geocomputation at the National Centre for Geocomputation, NUIM. She holds a PhD in Geoinformatics from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden and MSc in Applied Mathematics from University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her main research topic is Geovisual Analytics. Her work is supported by a SFI Research Frontiers grant, where she looks at how visualisation (spatial and non-spatial) of Spatial Statistical Methods facilitates understanding of results of these methods. She is a member of the StratAG (Strategic Research for Advanced Geotechnologies) group in the following two areas: she initiated StratAG collaboration with Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) on knowledge discovery from acoustic marine data; she is also involved in visual analytics research for movement data, where she is developing novel visualisation methods for trajectories of moving objects.

Key research topics:

1. Using Geovisual Analytics to facilitate interpretation of results of Spatial Statistical Methods
2. Novel Geovisual Analytical methods for analysis of movement data: e.g. space-time kernel density
3. Using Geovisual Analytics to improve seabed mapping from marine acoustic data

Professional activities:
- deputy leader of the WG4: Visual Analytics of Movement Data of the COST Action MOVE: Knowledge Discovery from Moving Objects
- member of the ICA commission on Geovisualization
- member of the ICA commission on Geospatial Analysis and Modelling
- co-chair of the Geocomputation 2007 organised at NCG in September 2007
